Rwanda Gorilla Trekking in Six Decisions

A gorilla trip to Volcanoes National Park comes down to six choices, and each one has a short answer.

  • Which tour

If you buy the permit yourself, a one-day tour from Kigali covers transport and guiding from $260. If you want one payment that includes everything, three packages bundle the permit in from $2,650.

    PERMIT-INCLUSIVE FROM: $2,650 PER PERSON

  • When to go

The long dry season from June to September gives firm trails and the scarcest permits. January and February are a drier spell that works almost as well.

DAILY PERMITS: 96, FIRST COME FIRST SERVED

  • How to get there

The drive from Kigali to Volcanoes National Park takes about three hours, so day tours pick you up before dawn for the 7:00 am briefing at Kinigi. Uganda's Mgahinga is also reachable from Kigali in about 3 hours across the border.

BRIEFING TIME: 7:00 AM AT KINIGI

  • What it costs

The permit is the biggest cost at $1,500 per person per day for foreign non-residents, and most day tours sell it separately. Uganda's permit is $800, so the cheaper permit may balance the longer journey.

RWANDA PERMIT: $1,500 VS UGANDA $800

  • Who it suits

Trekkers must be 15 or older, with no exemption, and treks run only with RDB guides in groups of 8. For younger or slower-paced days, golden monkey trekking takes age 12 and a nature walk takes age 5.

    MINIMUM AGE: 15 FOR GORILLAS

  • What to pack

Pack long trousers, waterproof hiking boots, gaiters, gardening gloves and a rain jacket, plus a face mask to wear near the gorillas. If you want more than gorillas, add a golden monkey trek on a $100 permit or a Bisoke climb at 3,711 metres.

How a Gorilla Trekking Day in Rwanda Works

A gorilla trekking day starts early and ends late if you come from Kigali. Here is how the official schedule runs.

The 7:00 Am Start at Kinigi

Report to the visitor information centre at the park entry at 7:00 am. The briefing happens at the RDB offices in Kinigi, which sit 13 km from Musanze. One-day tours from Kigali pick you up long before that, because the drive from Kigali to Volcanoes National Park takes about three hours.

The Gorilla Tracking Day Trip from Kigali lists a 4:30 am pickup from your Kigali accommodation, and the Uganda Gorilla Trek Day Trip from Kigali starts even earlier at 3:00 am for its border crossing. The pick, Universal Ventures 1-Day Gorilla Trek from Kigali, collects you anywhere in Kigali, though its listing does not state a pickup time, so confirm it with the operator.

The Gorilla Families

Volcanoes National Park has 12 gorilla families fully habituated for tourist visits, out of 23 groups living in and around the park. Each family has at least one silverback. A maximum of 8 visitors may see one family per day, which is why only 96 permits exist daily.

Rangers assign your family at the briefing.

The Trek Itself

Treks last from 30 minutes to four or more hours, and the official itinerary page puts typical tracking between 90 minutes and the whole morning depending on the family assigned. You walk at altitudes of 2,500 m to 4,000 m through steep forest.

TimeWhat happens
4:30 amPickup in Kigali on some day tours, confirm your tour's time
About 7:00 amBriefing and family assignment at Kinigi headquarters
MorningDrive to the trailhead, then 30 minutes to four or more hours of tracking
One hourWith the gorilla family, at 7 metres
AfternoonReturn to Kinigi, then lunch and the drive back to Kigali

The Hour With the Gorillas

Once the rangers find the family you get one hour with them. Keep a distance of 7 metres, about 22 feet, at all times. Wear a face mask, keep your voice low, avoid rapid movements and do not spit in the park, which is strictly prohibited.

Do not litter. If you have a cold, flu or any contagious illness, stay away to protect the gorillas. Leave no waste in the forest.

How Difficult Is Gorilla Trekking in Rwanda?

Gorilla trekking in Rwanda is a real hike at altitude, but the difficulty varies a lot from day to day.

What Makes It Hard

Three things stack up. You walk at 2,500 m to 4,000 m, where the thinner air tires legs faster than at sea level. The forest is steep, muddy and thick with vegetation, so footing is uneven even on a short trek.

And the length is a lottery, from 30 minutes to four or more hours, decided by which family the rangers assign. Prepare for the worst case, not the best one.

Who It Rules Out

The minimum age for gorilla tracking in Rwanda is 15 years, and there is no exemption. Anyone with a cold, flu or other contagious illness must not visit, to protect the gorillas. Expect steep ground on any trek, so train with uphill walks before you go.

The Help You Can Hire

Porters are available at the start of the trek to carry backpacks and cameras and to give you a steadying hand on steep sections. Their fee is not printed on the official pages, so agree on it on the spot. At park headquarters you can hire gumboots, raincoats and gloves, so a wet forecast does not have to end the plan.

Easier Alternatives in the Same Park

If the gorilla trek sounds like too much, Volcanoes National Park has gentler options. Golden monkey tracking has a minimum age of 12 and groups of up to 16 people, and the Afri Safaris Golden Monkey Trek runs it as a day trip from Kigali at $267. A guided nature walk costs $55 for foreigners and has a minimum age of just 5, making it the family option.

Rwanda vs Uganda for Gorilla Trekking

Both countries habituate mountain gorillas and both limit you to one hour with a family. The permit price, the distance rule and the trek length are where they differ.

The Rules and Prices Side by Side

The table compares the official figures from the Rwanda Development Board and the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) for foreign visitors. Rwanda costs more per permit but keeps the trek shorter and stands closer to the animals. UWA keeps the $800 tracking permit for 2027 and raises only the habituation experience.

Trekking in Uganda From Kigali

Kigali works as a base for Uganda treks too, and the Uganda day trip puts Mgahinga National Park about 3 hours from the city across the border. The Uganda Gorilla Trek Day Trip from Kigali costs $400 per person plus the $800 Uganda permit bought separately, with a 3:00 am pickup. If you want both countries, the 4-Day Rwanda and Uganda Gorilla Tour at $2,500 includes the Uganda gorilla permit and the Rwanda golden monkey permit in the price, though the Rwanda gorilla permit is not included.

Note that UWA now requires operators to pay for permits in full at booking, so dates are firm.

And the DR Congo?

Virunga National Park in the DR Congo also runs gorilla visits, with groups of 4 or 6 clients and one hour with the family. Its visa costs $105 and is only valid with a paid-in-full park package, and the park may close attractions for security reasons. Virunga sells gorilla visits only inside its own packages, so ask the park for the price.

Where to Stay for Gorilla Trekking in Rwanda

The 7:00 am report time at Kinigi decides the base. A night near the park turns a pre-dawn drive into a short one, and Kigali suits the one-day tours that collect you in the city.

Links open a hotel search for that area on Booking.com through Stay22. Prices and availability are shown there.

Other Treks in Volcanoes National Park

The park sells far more than gorilla permits, and several treks cost a fraction of the $1,500 gorilla ticket.

Permits and Prices for Every Activity

The table below compares the foreign visitor permit fees, minimum ages and formats for the park's other activities, all priced by the RDB portal. Most departures report at Kinigi at 7:00 am, so you can pair a gorilla trek one day with a cheaper trek the next.

The Ellen DeGeneres Campus

The Ellen DeGeneres Campus of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund opened in 2022 just outside the park. It runs daily from 9 am to 5 pm with last entry at 4 pm, no pre-booking needed and a suggested donation of $25 per adult. Inside are a replica of Dian Fossey's cabin, a 360-degree theater and nature trails.

Dian Fossey founded the Karisoke research camp in 1967 with two small tents and named it after Mount Karisimbi and Mount Bisoke. Some tours add the campus to the day: the Afri Safaris One-Day Gorilla Trek and the Afri Safaris Golden Monkey Trek both offer it as an optional stop.

Bookable Monkey Treks and Bisoke Hikes

Two golden monkey day trips run from Kigali: the Afri Safaris Golden Monkey Trek costs $267 with the permit as a booking option, and the Golden Monkey Trek Day Trip with Lunch costs $320 plus the $100 permit. For the volcano, the Usalama Mount Bisoke Hike Day Trip costs $328.58 and its listing does not state whether the $75 permit is in the price, so ask the operator before booking, while the Bisoke Summit and Crater Lake Day Trip costs $260 plus the $75 permit bought separately.

Plan Your Trip

How Much Does a Rwanda Gorilla Trekking Permit Cost?

The gorilla permit is the biggest cost of gorilla trekking in Rwanda, and most day tours from Kigali do not include it in their price.

The Official Price

A gorilla permit for a foreign non-resident costs $1,500 per person per day, sold by the Rwanda Development Board (RDB). The price rose from $750 to $1,500 in 2017. Ten percent of permit revenue goes to the communities around the park.

Because the permit dominates the budget, check before booking whether a tour price covers it. Most one-day tours from Kigali sell the transport, guide and lunch only, and you buy the permit separately. Three day tours bundle it in: Shalom Safaris 1-Day Gorilla Trek, Permit Included at $2,650, Hope Tours 1-Day Gorilla Trek, Permit Included at $2,675 and Devine 1-Day Gorilla Trek, Permit Included at $2,687 per person.

Permit Prices By Nationality

The RDB portal publishes different rates depending on who you are. Foreign non-residents pay the full $1,500. Rwandans, East African citizens, foreign residents and African citizens pay promotional rates, but the promotions do not apply from June to October.

Bring the documents listed, because the park checks them at the gate.

Who you arePermit priceNote
Foreign non-resident$1,500Full rate, no discount scheme
Foreign resident in Rwanda$500Promotional rate, not valid June to October, resident ID or visa of 4+ months
African citizen$500Promotional rate, not valid June to October, valid passport
Rwandan and East African citizen$200Promotional rate, not valid June to October, national ID or passport

The Low-Season 30% Discount

RDB offers 30% off gorilla permits from November to May, but only for combined trips. You need 2 nights in Akagera or Nyungwe National Park with a hotel receipt and one paid activity, or 1 night in each park on consecutive nights. One discounted permit is allowed per 3-day stay.

Check with RDB that the offer runs for your dates before you plan around it.

How to Book a Permit

Book through the RDB online portal or through a tour operator as part of a package. Bookings are first come first served, and Rwanda issues only 96 permits a day, 8 per gorilla family, so popular dates sell out early. When a slot is open you pay a deposit of 40% to 99% of the fee, and the balance must be paid before 30 days to confirm.

Rwandan nationals pay in full at booking. Cash payment at the park is not permitted, and staff verify your documents at the entry gate. A wrong or false application can mean denied entry even with a paid permit.

Refunds and Changes

The rules are strict. If you track the full day and meet no gorillas, 75% of the tracking fee is refunded. If the group's own movement prevents a full day of tracking, you get another chance or a full refund.

No refund is made for late arrival, flight delay, absence or cancellation for any other reason. Rescheduling a confirmed permit costs 20% of the application fee. More than 7 days before the visit it is approved automatically, inside 7 days it needs RDB approval.

Getting to Volcanoes National Park from Kigali

Almost every Rwanda gorilla trekking trip starts in Kigali, and the drive to the Kinigi briefing point shapes how early your day begins.

Flying In

Kigali International Airport (KGL) sits in Kanombe, about 10 km east of the city centre, with official taxis waiting outside arrivals. Citizens of all countries can get a visa on arrival without a prior application. A single entry visa costs up to $50 and a multiple entry visa up to $70.

The East Africa Tourist Visa costs $100 and covers Rwanda, Uganda and Kenya for three months, useful if you plan to trek in both countries. Citizens of the African Union, the Commonwealth and La Francophonie get a free visa for 30 days.

Flat green fields at Kinigi at dawn with the Virunga range behind a band of low cloud

The Drive to Kinigi

Visit Rwanda calls the route north to Volcanoes National Park a three-hour drive. The RDB portal puts Musanze at a 90-minute drive from Kigali, and the Kinigi park headquarters is 13 km beyond Musanze. Musanze itself sits at 1,850 m in the foothills of the Virunga Massif.

Allow the longer figure when you plan a day trip, because the road is the long half of the day.

Why Tours Pick Up Before Dawn

RDB requires every trekker to report at Kinigi at 7:00 am for the briefing, so day trips leave Kigali in the dark. The Gorilla Tracking Day Trip from Kigali picks up at 4:30 am, and the Uganda Gorilla Trek Day Trip from Kigali picks up at 3:00 am because of the border crossing. If a 4:00 am alarm sounds grim, a night near Musanze before the trek removes the pressure (where to stay).

Yellow Fever Rules

Per the RwandAir notice citing the Ministry of Health, travellers from non-endemic countries do not need a yellow fever certificate. Those arriving from endemic or outbreak countries must show a valid certificate or be vaccinated on arrival for $40.

What to Wear and Bring for Gorilla Trekking

The packing list is short, and several items can be hired at Kinigi if your bag is already full.

The Packing List

Visit Rwanda's Gorilla Friendly Pledge asks trekkers to wear a face mask at all times, keep physical distance and leave no waste. Hiking boots or sturdy shoes, waterproof clothing, long sleeves and gloves are the recommended kit. The RDB Bisoke page confirms that gumboots, raincoats and gloves can be hired at park headquarters, so mud gear is solvable on arrival.

Bring your passport for the gate document check, and water plus the packed lunch most tours include, because treks can run four or more hours.

  • Hiking boots or sturdy shoes
  • Waterproof clothing, long sleeves and gloves
  • A face mask
  • Gaiters or gumboots for mud, or hire boots, raincoats and gloves at headquarters
  • Passport for the gate check
  • Water and your packed lunch

Why the Rules Exist

The strict dress and distance rules trace back to how few mountain gorillas there once were. About thirty years before 2018, only around 240 animals remained in the Virunga Mountains. A census published in 2018 counted 604 in the Virunga Massif, and the total population across all ranges reached 1,063 after the Bwindi-Sarambwe count.

The IUCN moved the subspecies from Critically Endangered to Endangered in 2018. A cold passed from one visitor can reach an entire family, which is why masks, the 7 metre distance rule and the ban on trekking while sick are enforced.

The Honest Small Print

The tours are easy to book. The permit is where the surprises sit, so here they are before you pay.

  • Most one-day tours from Kigali do not include the gorilla permit. The Universal Ventures 1-Day Gorilla Trek from Kigali is $342 plus the $1,500 permit bought separately.
  • The Shalom Safaris 1-Day Gorilla Trek, Permit Included is one of the few day tours with the permit in its $2,650 price.
  • The minimum age for gorillas is 15, with no exceptions. Golden monkeys take children from 12.
  • RDB refunds 75% of the permit only if you track all day and meet no gorillas. Late arrival or cancellation gets nothing back.
  • The Uganda Gorilla Trek Day Trip from Kigali is $400 plus the $800 Uganda permit, with a 3:00 am pickup and a border crossing.
  • Treks run 30 minutes to four or more hours at 2,500 to 4,000 metres, and the family you are given decides the length.

Rwanda Gorilla Trekking Do's and Don'ts

Do

  • Do book early because only 96 permits are issued per day and eight visitors per family, and bookings are first come first served.
  • Do pay a 40% to 99% deposit when a slot opens and settle the balance before 30 days, because cash payment at the park is not permitted.
  • Do report at Kinigi at 7:00 am on trek day, because late arrivals get no refund under the RDB terms.
  • Do carry your passport and correct documents to the gate, because false applications can mean denied entry even with a paid permit.
  • Do wear a face mask and keep 7 metres from the gorillas, because the Gorilla Friendly Pledge makes both conditions of the visit.
  • Do consider the 30% low-season discount from November to May if you add two nights in Akagera or Nyungwe with a paid activity.

Don't

  • Don't trek with a cold, flu or other contagious illness, because gorillas are vulnerable to human infections and sick visitors are turned away.
  • Don't expect your money back for a cancellation, because no refund is made for absence or trip cancellation for any other reason.
  • Don't ignore the reschedule fee, because moving a confirmed permit costs 20% of the application fee.
  • Don't assume the promo rates apply to you, because the $200 and $500 rates are for residents and African citizens and not valid June to October.
  • Don't plan a lie-in, because treks run 30 minutes to four or more hours and the briefing starts at 7:00 am.
  • Don't litter, spit or move quickly in the forest, because the park rules ban all three and a mask and low voice protect the family you paid $1,500 to meet.

Best Time for Gorilla Trekking in Rwanda

Gorillas are tracked every day of the year in Volcanoes National Park, so the season changes the mud and the crowds more than the chance of seeing a family.

Dry Season and Rainy Season

The dry season runs from June to mid-September, and roads and paths are easier then. The long rains peak from March to May, with the heaviest rainfall in March, April and May. The short rains fall around October to December.

Trails at 2,500 m to 4,000 m turn slick in the rain, and the forest paths can be steep. Treks last from 30 minutes to four or more hours, so dry footing matters. Every permit holder still reports at Kinigi at 7:00 am whatever the sky is doing.

Temperatures and What to Pack

Peak temperatures rarely exceed 30 C by day or drop below 15 C at night. Kigali averages 21 C, and the Virunga mountains are the coolest place in Rwanda, so bring a warm layer for the early morning briefing. Waterproof clothing earns its space in the bag in any season.

Permit Prices by Season

Foreign visitors pay $1,500 per person per day in every season. The promotional rates of $200 and $500 cover Rwandan, East African and African citizens and foreign residents only, and they are not valid from June to October. The RDB low-season discount gives 30% off permits from November to May, but only on combined trips that include at least two nights in Akagera or Nyungwe with a paid activity, one discounted permit per stay.

Uganda runs its own low season rate of $600 for foreign visitors in April, May and November against its usual $800. Plan around the season if the permit is the biggest line in your budget.

  • Dry season: June to mid-September, easier paths and roads
  • Long rains peak March to May, short rains around October to December
  • 30% RDB discount November to May with Akagera or Nyungwe nights
  • Uganda low season $600 in April, May and November

Rwanda Gorilla Trekking FAQ

How much does it cost to trek with a gorilla in Rwanda?

The gorilla permit costs $1,500 per person per day for foreign visitors, sold by the RDB. Tour prices sit on top of that: day trips from Kigali run from $260 to $350 plus the permit. See the permit section for payment and reschedule rules.

How difficult is the trek to see the gorillas in Rwanda?

Hikes last from 30 minutes to four or more hours at altitudes of 2,500 m to 4,000 m, depending on the family assigned. Porters are available to carry packs and help on steep sections. The trek day section walks through how the day unfolds.

Is gorilla trekking in Rwanda worth it?

You get one hour with a habituated family in groups of no more than 8 visitors, and 10% of permit revenue funds local communities. The Virunga population has grown from about 240 animals to 604, with permits funding the protection. Weigh the $1,500 permit against Uganda's $800 using the Rwanda vs Uganda section.

Is the gorilla permit included in the tour price?

Usually not. Most one-day tours from Kigali sell transport, guide and lunch only, and you buy the $1,500 permit separately. A few, like the Shalom Safaris 1-Day Gorilla Trek, Permit Included at $2,650, bundle the permit into the price.

Can you do gorilla trekking in Rwanda in one day from Kigali?

Yes, and it is the most common format. The pick is the Universal Ventures 1-Day Gorilla Trek from Kigali: a 12 hour private day with pickup in the city, lunch and 4.9 from 83 reviews, priced at $342 plus the permit.

What is the age limit for gorilla trekking in Rwanda?

The minimum age for gorilla tracking is 15 years, set by the RDB. Golden monkey tracking allows children from 12, and the nature walk from 5. Most listed tours mirror the 15-year rule.

Is Rwanda or Uganda better for gorilla trekking?

Rwanda's permit costs $1,500 against Uganda's $800, but Rwanda offers a shorter drive and a one-day trip from Kigali. Uganda treks run 2 to 7 hours in Bwindi, and a low season rate of $600 applies in April, May and November. Compare both in the Rwanda vs Uganda section.

What happens if you do not see the gorillas?

If you track all day and fail to contact a family, 75% of the tracking fee is refunded. If the group's own movement prevents a full day of tracking, you get another chance or a full refund. No refund applies to late arrivals, flight delays or cancellations. The permit section has the full rules.

The Universal Ventures 1-Day Gorilla Trek from Kigali costs $342 per person with private transport and lunch, with the $1,500 permit bought separately.

Free cancellation up to 24 hours before the trek.
